Pugh Thanks Obama for his Efforts to Ensure Equal Treatment

Posted by Staff on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 9:00:00 AM EST

City Council President Charles Pugh discusses his visit to the White House with the Detroit News:

Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh thanked President Barack Obama for his efforts to ensure equal treatment for all Americans.

"The president is an advocate, along with other crusaders, who just want equality," Pugh told The Detroit News at a White House celebration Tuesday night for LBGT Pride Month.

More than 180 people attended the event, which included Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

"What an honor to receive an invitation from the White House to be here," said Pugh, a former broadcaster and the first openly gay candidate to win a major election in Detroit.

Pugh's message to the president was that Detroit was "forward thinking in electing me, allowing me to be who I am and to serve them with honor and dignity."

He noted that many religious groups in Detroit endorsed him, including the Council of Baptist Pastors. The endorsements "were great signals that we are moving forward on this issue."

"It never came up during the campaign in a meaningful way," he said.

Pugh said Detroiters want competence.

"It has not been an issue since I've been elected," Pugh said of his sexual orientation. "Detroiters want people who are going to serve, who are scandal free and who are going to serve with professionalism."

At the event, Obama vowed again to convince Congress to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and to end the "don't ask, don't tell" sexual orientation policy for the military.

He also noted his administration's efforts to bar hospitals from denying gay and lesbian partners from hospital visitation rights.

Although final regulations haven't been issued, Health and Human Services Director Kathleen Sebelius sent letters Tuesday to hospitals asking them to allow visitation rights.

"As this work continues, I am going to be standing shoulder to shoulder with you, fighting by your side every step of the way," Obama said.
